While everyone loves receiving a wedding invitation in the mail, sometimes deciphering the dress code can be a bit confusing. After all, black tie optional leaves things very open-ended! If you’re wondering what to wear, we’re breaking down the most common dress codes so that you’ll know what to wear:
Casual
While the dress code may say “casual,” there are still a few rules: you shouldn’t show up in jeans, tank tops, or t-shirts, as it’s a bit too casual for the event. For women, sundresses, skirts, or nice pants are ideal, while for men, polos, khakis, and collared shirts are perfect. Think of this dress code as if you were getting ready for a nice lunch with friends!
Semi-Formal
A step up from casual but not quite formal, this dress code can also be referred to as “cocktail.” For men, collared shirts, slacks, and suits are good, but a tie is not necessarily required. For women, short cocktail dresses, midi dresses, and jumpsuits fit the dress code beautifully.
Black Tie Optional
This dress code is confusing, as it falls directly between fully formal and semi-formal. For women, midi length dresses, jumpsuits, and nice cocktail dresses will fit right in. For men, tuxedos are encouraged, but not required. A dark colored suit will also be completely acceptable at this wedding!
Black Tie
As the most formal dress code, plan on dressing for the occasion. For men, black tie means just that: a tuxedo. For women, full-length dresses are ideal, as are nice jumpsuits. It’s always better to dress on the nicer side!
