We know you've got a million things swirling around in your head as you prep for your first wedding dress appointment here at our boutique in Annapolis, MD. You’ve probably nailed down who you’re bringing, maybe even have a few styles saved, but there’s one small detail that can make a huge difference in how you feel in those gowns: your shoes!
It might seem like a tiny thing, but what you wear on your feet can drastically impact your dress-shopping experience. Let’s dive into the why and the what of bridal appointment footwear.
Why Do Shoes Matter for a Try-On?
When you step into a dress, whether it’s a flowing A-line or a sleek sheath, you need to see how it hangs, how it moves, and most importantly, where the hem hits.
Hemline Accuracy: The biggest reason! If you try on a dress barefoot, and then plan to wear a three-inch heel on your wedding day, the dress will look significantly shorter (and sometimes ill-fitting) during your appointment. Wearing a heel similar to your wedding shoe height allows you and your consultant to get a much more accurate idea of the necessary length for ordering and eventual alterations.
Posture and Feel: Heels change your posture. They make you stand taller, shift your weight, and can even change the way a bodice settles on your torso. Seeing a dress with the "wedding day posture" makes the entire experience feel more real.
Comfort and Confidence: While we don't recommend wearing sky-high stilettos you can barely walk in, wearing a shoe that feels elevated and "special" can boost your confidence as you step onto the pedestal.

The Go-To Rule: Match the Heel Height!
|
What if I don't know my exact wedding shoes yet? That’s totally fine! Just aim for an "average" height, say 2 to 3 inches, or bring a couple of options if you are truly torn between a low heel and a high one. We can pin the dress with both, giving you a better visual.
A Few Do's and Don'ts:
DO:
Choose a comfortable, broken-in shoe. You'll be slipping them on and off multiple times.
Consider the color. While it doesn't have to be white, wearing a neutral color (nude, metallic, or white) can help you visualize the final look better than, say, your bright red rain boots!
Bring them in a separate bag. It’s easier than trying to wear them to the appointment and then switch.
DON'T:
Show up barefoot with plans for a 4-inch heel. You won't get a true picture of the dress's length.
Wear shoes with a complicated lacing system. Time is precious, and we want to spend it trying on dresses, not untying knots!
Stress about them being your final shoes. They are simply a stand-in for height and visualization.
We can’t wait to help you find "the one" here at Mary's Designer Bridal Boutique in Annapolis, MD. Having the right shoes just makes the magic moment even better!
