If you’re planning your first bridal shopping appointment, you likely have a lot of questions about what the experience will be like. While we’ve already covered a lot of our top tips in this previous blog post, one topic we haven’t discussed yet is spray tans/self tanner vs. wedding gowns. We’re going to talk about coming into the store to try on gowns with a spray tan and then touch on having a spray tan for fittings as well as the wedding day!

Starting with the bridal gown shopping experience, we find that many brides-to-be want to come wedding dress shopping with a spray tan. We totally understand this, because a spray tan is a major confidence booster, right? Who doesn’t want to feel confident when they’re trying on the most important gown they’ll ever own?
Here’s the deal, though - spray tans are certainly going to sabotage your wedding dress shopping experience because the tan can transfer onto the white fabric of the gown, causing difficulty to remove stains. The last thing we want is to have brides trying on gowns covered in tanner! So we ultimately recommend not having a spray tan when you’re coming in for your bridal appointment. If you do happen to have a spray tan in advance, make sure you book your appointment at least a week after your spray tan so most of the transferable bronzer has faded.

We know that this might be disappointing to hear, but think about it this way: it might seem nonsensical, but it can actually be helpful to not be at your most confident when you’re trying on wedding dresses. If you feel beautiful in a gown when you’re not at your most confident, just imagine how gorgeous you’ll feel when you’re all decked out in your spray tan and glam!
As far as fittings go, the same applies. You’re free to have a spray tan in advance, just make sure there’s plenty of time between the day you get the spray tan and the day you have a fitting with your seamstress. It’s best to avoid anything that can potentially mess up your dress so that your tailor doesn’t have to work extra hard to make it perfect for you. Best to focus on making the right alterations, not trying to remove stains from fittings!

For your wedding day, we absolutely encourage you to have a spray tan if that’s what you want for your bridal look! So many brides love the glow that it gives them and how it makes their skin pop against their white gown. Just know that some transfer is inevitable, between the makeup, tan, lotion, perfume, and sweat while you’re dancing the night away. This is no biggie because we offer cleaning & preservation services that will take care of that after the wedding! And if you’re worried about it transferring throughout your wedding day around your neckline or other visible areas, here’s a tip: spray some hair spray along the edges where you don’t want visible transfer, let it dry, and then put your dress on. It will keep any makeup or spray tan from transferring!
